World Book Night 2012 at University Library Epsom

May 10, 2012

On April 23rd, the University Library at Epsom took part in World Book Night 2012.   As avid readers and book lovers, the Epsom Library team wanted to share their passion with students by giving away 24 copies of Mark Billingham’s “Sleepyhead” as part of this annual event.

About the Book – “Sleepyhead”…

“Alison Willetts has survived a stroke, deliberately induced by a skilful manipulation of the pressure points on the head and neck. She can see, hear and feel but she is completely unable to move or communicate. In leaving Alison Willetts alive, the police believe the killer’s made his first mistake. Then DI Tom Thorne discovers the horrifying truth: it isn’t Alison who is the mistake, it’s the three women already dead. Thorne must find a killer whose agenda is disturbingly unique, and Alison, the one person who holds the key to the killer’s identity, is unable to say anything . . .”

World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books.  Launched in theUKin 2011, this year’s event will see thousands of people go out into their communities across the UK and Ireland to give away one million free paperbacks.

Members of the public are invited to apply to be one of the book-givers. Those selected are passionate readers who enjoy recommending the books they love to other readers.  The books are provide free of charge to the book-givers by World Book Night with support from its partners and sponsors.

The University Library Epsom successfully gave away all 24 copies of Mark Billingham’s thriller Sleepyhead.  Students were delighted to receive a free copy of the book and “loved” the idea that they too can encourage others to read by passing the book onto someone else.  To help chart the extraordinary journey that each of the 1,000,000 books might go on, students’ who received a book are encouraged to register their book on the website using the book’s unique code.

As part of the World Book Night event at Epsom, students were invited to browse a selection of titles on the promotional display carousel, collect their free book and pick up a free bookmark.

The Library’s new “Rare Book of the Month” feature

Following the launch of the Special Collections Guide, a new feature on the Library’s website has been developed to promote items from the University Library’s rare book collections.

Each month, the Library’s website will feature a selected rare book with a description of its history, context and value for researchers, illustrated with an image from the book itself.

The aim of the feature is to raise awareness both within UCA and the wider research community of the range and content of our rare book collections.

These collections originated from the founding organizations of the University and have grown through donation and acquisition during the subsequent years; they contain many interesting and valuable items.

We hope that you will enjoy seeing a glimpse of the wide range of materials that we are privileged to have in our care.
